Amber heat health alert 8-12 July

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an Amber Heat Health Alert for all regions in England, from 9am on Wednesday 8 July until 9pm on Sunday 12 July. Rising temperatures may increase health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups. Look after your skin, especially during the summer months. Sunburn doesn't just happen on holiday – you can burn in the UK, even when it's cloudy.

Sunburn increases your risk of skin cancer. To avoid sunburn use sunscreen – at least factor 30 and with a four or five star UVA protection.

Aim to strike a balance between protecting yourself from the sun and getting enough vitamin D from sunlight with short regular exposures outdoors. Think about taking a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of Vitamin D to protect bone and muscle health.

Babies should be kept out of direct sunlight. Prams should not be covered with blankets, cloths or any cover that prevents the air from circulating. Instead attach a parasol or sunshade to your baby's pushchair.
