Living independently for the first time is a big challenge. Your PA is there for you to talk to about this. We can also work with you to help develop and support you with the skills you will need when you are living independently.

Some of the skills needed include:

  • Looking after yourself and staying safe.
  • Keeping your environment clean and hygienic.
  • Cooking and shopping for nutritious food.
  • Managing money and paying bills.
  • Having valid ID and a bank account.
  • Accessing local facilities and being a responsible community member.
  • Decorating your home and reporting repairs.
  • Making complaints and knowing how to vote.

We work with partners to make sure that you have all the support in place that you will need to manage your move into independence.

There is also an opportunity to try out your independence skills in the care leavers’ trainer flat. This is a fully equipped flat where you can spend short periods to see how it feels to live on your own. Speak to your PA to find out more.
